March 2023: Spring Break Doesn't Mean Study Harder and Longer...

Spring Break is approaching quickly and with that we know that exams are happening right before and after that week.

What we hear and see all the time is that this week that's set aside to "break" and recuperate from the stress of the semester in the first half, actually becomes the opposite.

More often than not, actually, Spring Break is seen as an opportunity to study EVEN MORE, and the idea of taking a break or doing something relaxing and caring for yourself is not even on the radar. Do we have to highlight what this mentality can lead to? You got it, BURNOUT.

You are already grinding and studying in your spare time during the busy part of the semester and go into overtime during this week and trying to catch up or get ahead of the game on learning and studying. Now...are we saying don't utilize part of the break to study or avoid studying at all? Absolutely not. Honestly, we can probably guess the thought of that made your anxiety sky rocket!

Studying during Spring Break might be necessary at times, especially if you have exams right after, but taking the approach of studying every spare minute during this week is not going to be helpful, but in fact can be really detrimental to your ability to function and be successful the rest of the semester.

So how do you make sure you don't burn your candle at both ends? You got it, TAKE A BREAK.

Make YOU be the priority during the break and schedule studying around activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Schedule hangouts with your peeps, travel, do something creative, eat foods that make you feel good, participate in spiritual activities, if that's your thing. Above anything, make sure that most of your break is spent filling your cups back up, because you know they have been draining over the first part of the semester.

Spring Break is also a great time to connect with CAPS, get more information about our services, or schedule your intake and start therapy. The weeks after the break only get more stressful and busy, so if you are feeling like you need mental health support, utilize this free time to take a step for yourself.

Remember, Spring Break doesn't mean it's time to study harder and longer...it means this is a built in break in the semester because it's NEEDED.

You know yourself the best and what you need to feel nourished and well, so spend sometime now reflecting on what you need and how you can give yourself that during the break.

Sending you good energy and relaxing vibes your way!

May 2023: The Connection Between Music and Mental Health

If we were to ask you right now to name one song that always makes you feel more positive, lighter, and calmer...what song would you share with us?  Maybe even thinking about the song had a reaction for you or made you want to play it (which we highly encourage at any point!) Music is something enmeshed in our daily lives, but do you ever just think about the psychological impact it has on you? Well, buckle up because this blog post is ALL about the powerful connection between music and our mental health.  A lot of research has come out about the link between music and brain/mental health and how listening and making music has been identified as a critical way to preserve and enhance our brain's health. This includes promoting mental well-being, increasing social connection, and stimulating thinking skills. And, yes, music can be a huge source of pleasure for us, but it also relaxes the mind, energizes our bodies, and can even help people manage pain.  And if you r...

February 2024: Is Your Body Image Impacting Your Dating Life/Relationships?

With February being Body Awareness Month and also the "month of love" according to the Valentine's holiday, we are going to dive into how body image can have an impact, both positive and negative, on your dating life and relationships.  But what actually is body image? It's definitely a term that has come up more in the last few years, especially with the various "Body Positive" movements, but in our experience, there isn't always clarity on what exactly it stands for and represents. So let's define it before looking at it's impact.   Body image refers to an individual's perception, thoughts, and feelings about their own body. It involves how one sees themselves when they look in the mirror, how they feel about their body size, shape, and appearance, and the thoughts and beliefs they have about their physical self. Body image is a subjective experience and can be influenced by various factors, including societal standards, media representatio...
